Warrant officer single-handedly foils stokvel robbery

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has commended a warrant officer for his bravery after he stopped four people from robbing members of a stokvel club.

LIMPOPO – The attempted robbery happened at around 12:00 on Thursday at Majosi Village under Hlanganani policing area, outside Giyani.

According to Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo the group of stokvel members were reportedly  in a house sharing out the money, when four robbers broke the window, entered the house and pointed firearms at them. One of these members managed to send a message through to a person who was at the local satellite police station. The WO was informed and he together with the other person rushed to the scene where they were shot at by the robbers on arrival. The WO single-handedly took on the armed robbers and returned fire, killing one of them and wounding another, Mojapelo explained.

A hunt for the remaining robbers continues and the police urge anyone with information to contact the nearest police station or call the 24-hour Crime Stop number at 086 001 0111.

Ledwaba warned residents, especially those who are involved in stokvel activities, to desist from the tendency of withdrawing large sums of money and then sharing it among themselves at home. The banks should instead be used to make transactions where these monies could be transferred into individual accounts, he concluded.
