Illegally parked vehicles will be towed, says muni

A shortage of parking in the city's CBD is apparently what leads motorists to in some areas, park in the middle of the street and in this way, obstruct traffic.

POLOKWANE -It is specifically in the area surrounding the Polokwane Police Station, the Magistrate’s Court, and the municipality.

Several readers complained, saying nothing is done by officers in terms of the poor traffic flow that comes about because of the illegal parking.

One motorist, who spoke to BONUS on condition of anonimity, said he had noticed last week that the outer lane in Schoeman Street, running past the police station, was fully reserved by vehicles that had simply been parked and the emergency indicators left on.

“Although the hazard lights are on, it should not be acceptable because if it starts in one street, it will blow over to the rest of the city,” he said.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshiditso Mothapo confirmed that this type of parking is illegal.

“The municipality’s traffic officers impose fines on motorists and vehicles are towed away in many instances. This has been an ongoing issue and the municipality is working hard to ensure that it stops,” he said.

Mothapo added there is a shortage of parking space in the city, but with paid on-street parking, there should be more space available.

“The system was implemented because motorists would park their cars in the CBD and then leave town. The new system addresses this as they now have to pay. Motorists that are discontented with the paid system should write to the municipal council to show their discontent because the implementation was a resolution taken during a council meeting.”
