Mvusuludzo taxi rank closed amid war over taxi routes

A war has broken out between the Malamulele and Giyani taxi associations, seemingly over the commuter routes at the Mvusuludzo rank from Thohoyandou to Giyani.

LIMPOPO – The circumstances leading to the closure of the Mvusuludzo rank were still unclear at the time of going to press, but according to information, the Giyani Taxi Association wants to use the route without official approval from the Malamulele Taxi Association.

Some of the commuters last Monday had no choice but to use alternative modes of transport to get to work, as the Mvusuludzo rank was closed.

According to a queue marshall who didn’t want to be named, the Giyani Taxi Association was not allowed to ferry commuters any longer, and the Malamulele Taxi Association was the only one operating, transporting commuters from Thohoyandou to Malamulele and they were ferried by the Giyani Taxi Association.

He said they were surprised to see the Mvusuludzo Taxi Rank blocked by the Malamulele Taxi Association claiming that the Giyani Taxi Association are not entitled to ferry commuters from Thohoyandou to Giyani because they don’t have a permit to do so.

According to the marshall, the Giyani Taxi Association urged that they don’t want commuters who are travelling to Giyani inconvenienced, by having been left in Malamulele and then having to opt for another taxi.

Some of the frustrated commuters don’t know what to do after the rank was closed.

A commuter who travels to and from work in Thohoyandou using the Makwarela taxis, said life was tough as they now have to cough up double the amount they are used to.

No comment could immediately be sourced from either taxi association.
