‘Report these illegal parking attendants’ – muni

Motorists who frequent the Tzaneen Central Business District say they are subjected to abuse by self-imposed parking attendants who operate in town.

LIMPOPO – A contract between the municipality and a company appointed for this purpose expired a few months ago and young men, some of them allegedly criminals and drug addicts, have taken over the parking spaces in town and verbally abuse motorists whom they say occupy parking spaces for too long at a time, furious motorists told CV.

“All they want to to do is make a quick buck and rent out the spaces,” one man said.

Some motorists told CV that they work in town and have to park in the CBD from 07:00 until 17:00.

“So when we return to our vehicles, these guys demand high amounts of cash or else they threaten to break into our vehicles the next time we park and leave,” they said.

Another motorist who did not want to be named, said a self-appointed car guard threw the coins back at him, demanding a huge amount for the parking time.

According to Greater Tzaneen Municipal Spokesperson, Vutivi Makhubele there is no official company in control of the parking space in the CBD.

“People who pretend to be parking attendants are operating there illegally. Motorists in the CBD must not pay for parking, and instead, report those who threaten or intimidate them.”

She said a new company is expected to fulfil this function in future, but for the time being, parking in the CBD is free.
