Mogalakwena Municipality under administration: process started

The first step has been taken to put the Moglakwena Municipality under administration.

MOKOPANE – Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC, Basikopo Makamu announced at the Provincial Members Assembly of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) in Bela-Bela yesterday that an application to place the Mogalakwena Municipality under administration in terms of Section 139 (1) of the Constitution has been submitted.
False rumours emerged yesterday that the municipality is already under administration. DA Member of Parliament, Beyers Smit told Bosveld this is only the beginning of a long process which must be followed before the municipality is placed under administration.
“First the MEC must notify the municipality of its intention. Then the municipality will be granted two weeks to respond. The application will also go to the National Council of Provinces which will conduct a thorough investigation. If the finding is that the process was fair, and in the best interest to intervene, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will make a final decision.
Smit said he is in favour of this intervention because of all the ongoing financial issues within the municipality. There are many in-fighting where one group uses interventions to outsmart another.
Bosveld approached Malesela Selokela, Head of Communications of the Municipality for comment, but he said the municipality was unaware of any application or intention to place the municipality under administration.
