Provincial Spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke explains that during March 2019, the men, who are both Sergeants attached to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, allegedly found trucks full of chrome in Burgersfort.

“Instead of effecting an arrest, the men, who were in the company of another officer, demanded a R60 000 bribe from the drivers in order to release the trucks. It is further alleged that the agreement was made to pay the said amount at a later stage. Our investigations revealed that the money was indeed paid into one of the suspect’s bank account,” Maluleke said.

The matter was reported to the Hawks for further investigation and the duo were arrested at their workplace.

“The suspects are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 November 2019 to face charges relating to corruption and defeating the ends of justice. The third suspect is still being sought,” his statement concluded.
