Small in stature but fearless on the rugby field

Mogase Phiri (12) was recently announced as the player of the tournament during the Witrivier 7's rugby tour which took place from 24 to 26 October.

POLOKWANE – The Laerskool Pietersburg-Noord Primary learner may be small in size but he has a big heart.

His favourite player is Faf de Klerk because he says that he may be small, but he is scared of nothing. He adds that this is the way he sees himself on the field when he plays.

His favourite team is the Stormers and he has been playing in the number nine jersey for the past nine years.

“I love the sport because you need to have strength and speed and need to be able to deal with contact. I am fast and love contact sport, so it was made for me,” he says.

He practices two days a week with his team but does individual practice in between as he believes that you need to take more time for the sport you love then just a hour or two with the team.

He says that he did not expect to be the player of the tournament and that he was happy but surprised.

Mogase says thanks to his mother, he celebrated with some cake and friends and family.

While other learners enjoy the school holidays, he will practice his passing with his big brother who plays rugby for Ben Vorster, to make sure that he is all set when the new season starts.

“Do not be scared to play the game. People may say that you will get injured but I can tell you that it is fun to be on the field and to represent your school.

“The contact that you have on the field is something that you get used to and actually learn to love,” he says.
