Relocation of Limpopo Legislature won’t be a reality soon

POLOKWANE – Although approved by the Limpopo and National Treasury in 2017, the relocation of Limpopo Legislature is still a long road ahead.

The building is set to be erected in Grobler Street on the R81 opposite the private hospital.

According to Mamoshashe Mabotja, Public Works Spokesperson, they have been waiting for a directive from the legislature on the design and specifications of the building. Funding was also cited as a hiccup in the process.

When contacting Treasury in this regard, Spokesperson Anna Oliphants referred Review back to Public Works.

Mabotja reiterated that it is yet to be determined if the construction has been included in Treasury’s annual performance plan.

In 2017, Treasury Spokesperson Sydwell Sibanda confirmed that a feasibility study had been concluded.

This, as the issue of the relocation of Legislature had been on the cards for more than a decade.

Already in 2002, the Mathale-administration had to pay a R92 million out-of-court settlement for reneging on a contract four years earlier to build the complex at R500 million.

Members of Legislature and administrative personnel currently have to travel to Lebowakgomo daily for sittings, meetings and general day-to-day functions.
