Shooting at Sterkstroom Clinic condemned by Health Department

Security guards and nurses feared for their lives at Sterkstroom Clinic in the Malavuwe area outside Thohoyandou, after shots were fired at the security guards in the early hours of Friday morning.

LIMPOPO – According to information received, two security guards were on night duty when one of them spotted three unknown men seated under a tree at 01:30.

As he approached them, they started shooting at the guard, who returned fire. They fled the scene.

The security guard, whose identity is withheld for his protection, said life is hard working at night as thugs see them as easy targets.

“I informed my co-worker over the phone and she informed the nurses and the community.

“Residents came in larger numbers to help after they heard about the incident,” said the guard.

The traditional leader of Malavuwe village, Acting Chief Humbulani Mafenya-Mphaphuli said he was worried that nurses and guards are at risk while working to help residents.

“We have to protect the innocent at all costs.

“We urge residents to stand together and help when they see someone being terrorised by criminals.”

The Spokesperson for the Department of Health, Neil Shikwambana condemned the vandalism of government property and those who target nurses and guards.

“Sterkstroom Clinic operates at night through a call system, where a guard can call the nurses after a patient has arrived and needs the necessary attention.”

In another incident the same morning, there was a break-in at Mukula Clinic and Thase Secondary School in Ha-Muraga village, however, nothing was stolen and no one was injured in these incidents.
