Two arrested for Musina hotel robbery and hijacking incident

Two people, aged 28 and 35, were arrested earlier this morning during a snap operation in connection with a recent armed robbery at a hotel and a same-day hijacking incident in Musina.

LIMPOPO – The armed robbery took place on Tuesday, 5 November at a hotel in Musina where two security officers were robbed of their firearms. It is alleged the officers arrived at the hotel to collect cash when they were accosted by the duo. During the incident they failed to take the money and instead robbed the officers of a pistol and a rifle before they fled the scene in vehicle.

The snap operation, conducted by the Makhado Task Team, Musina Visible Police, Community Police Forum and the local Security Companies, followed up on leads received and the duo were arrested at around 03:00 at a house in Extension 09 at Mmatswale settlement outside Musina.

Preliminary investigations have also linked the accused to a hijacking incident that took place on the same day as the hotel robbery. It is alleged five people accosted and threatened a 32-year-old woman and hijacked her VW Polo near Appelblaar, Extension 04. The said vehicle was later found abandoned at a farm outside Musina. A manhunt for the remaining suspects is still underway and police appeal to anyone with information that can lead to their arrest to contact Colonel Mamuhoyi at 082 414 776, the crime stop number at 0860010111or the nearest police station.

The accused are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 November on charges of armed robbery, carjacking , possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen properties.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Genl Jan Scheepers commended the members for a well-coordinated operation that led to the swift arrest of these criminals.
