POLOKWANE – Love, care and kindness are some of the few things which come at no cost. These were, in a way, some of the extra items on offer at Taberna Dei Mother Campus’ Shop for Free event which took place on Saturday, 19 October.

Everyone who cannot afford to buy basic necessities were invited to ‘shop’ at the church – at no cost. There were items available for everyone. From a variety of clothing items and shoes to children’s toys.

Christiaan Gouws, organiser of the event, says the day was to afford the less fortunate with an opportunity to shop like anyone else would. He says the shoppers had the opportunity to pick out whatever they liked to take home.

The church provided toiletry packs for everyone who took part as well as groceries for those in need. “It took us two months to gather all the items and we try to do this at least twice a year.”

He says the event is a joint effort between all the Taberna Dei churches in Polokwane and adds that the idea came about when they saw other churches at a visit in Cape Town do the same.

Christiaan adds that they take down the contact information along with their skills and talents to form a database for skills development. “We refer to the database when opportunities come up and when we are able to place them in jobs.” He says this is just one of the ways in which they are trying to give back to the community.
