“The victim is said to have left home at 07:00 for school but her mother met her along the road at about 08:00 and questioned why she was not at school. It then transpired that the victim had gone to the local spaza shop en route to school. She told her mother that she had been raped by the spaza shop owner who gave her R20 afterwards,” he explained.

The victim’s mother reported the matter to the police and the man was arrested.

Mojapelo says the incident sparked violence in the area and the community went on the rampage, damaging and looting foreign-owned shops.

Public Order Police were dispatched to calm the situation.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has commended police for the swift arrest of the accused but also condemned the violence that erupted in the area.
