Stop sign on R71 off-ramp onto the bypass, a safety precaution

A stop sign which was recently erected on the R71 off-ramp onto the bypass has left many motorists confused.

POLOKWANE – The construction of the Polokwane Eastern Ringroad has resumed after the project was handed over to a new contractor. This construction falls under the Department of Public Works but is administrated by the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL).

Review spoke to Public Works spokesperson, Mamoshashe Mabotha about the placement of the sign. He says the stop sign was erected as a precautionary measure because the road is still under construction. He continues and says that even though it is not legal under normal circumstances to have a stop sign at the end of an off-ramp, with the current state of the roads it has been deemed necessary.

“The stop sign is put into place to monitor and control traffic flow.” He explains that had the sign not been erected there would be a ‘disturbance in traffic as motorists need to share lanes’.

Mabotha concludes that the sop sign will be removed once the construction has been completed and it is no longer needed.
