Flora Park Comprehensive High School presented its top 20 best performing learners with third quarter awards during the assembly session last Monday.
Top three learners in each grade received medals and cash prizes. The overall best performer in each Grade received R150 in cash, the runner-up R100 and second runner-up R50. Principal Joseph Masekela indicated that they also awarded progressed learners, top learners per subject as well as those who got 90% and above in Mathematics in Grades 8 and 9.
He said the main aim of Maths awards were to encourage learners to take the subject serious from a young age. The purpose of the quarterly awards is to motivate learners to work hard, Masekela explained and added that they were targeting a 90% pass rate at the end of the current academic year.
“We believe these quarterly awards will push our learners to do well in their final examinations. In the third schooling term we achieved 82% pass rate which is an improvement from 74,4% in term two. We are confident that we will achieve our target at the end of the year. We aim for 40% bachelor passes and we also hope to attain a trophy at the provincial National Senior Certificate awards. Our wish is to have at least one Grade 12 learner representing the school at the provincial awards,” Masekela explained.
He indicated that the support learners get from the school governing body, parents, educators and support staff also contribute enormously to their performance. As part of the final exams preparations Grade 12 learners attended extra lessons at the school on Saturday where they were assisted with Maths paper 2. Masekela highlighted that their analysis has shown that most learners struggle with Maths paper 2 hence they initiated the programme. He concluded by saying they were joined by learners from other circuits such as Magatle and Moletlane.
