7 men accused of robbery arrested following car chase in Burgersfort

Police say a manhunt has been launched for one man who evaded arrest and ran off on foot as well as other people believed to be involved.

LIMPOPO – Seven men believed to be responsible for a business robbery in the Mecklenburg area on Sunday night, 13 October, were arrested in the early hours of Monday morning by police in conjunction with members of the visible policing and crime prevention unit.

Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says police were performing normal patrol duties along the R37 in the Mashamothane area when they came across a suspicious Toyota Quantum. They tried to stop the vehicle but the accused sped off and a car chase ensued.

“The suspects were cornered at Mashamothane Moshate Cross and arrested. One of the suspects managed to evade arrest when he ran into nearby bushes,” Mojapelo said.

During the arrest, a 9mm firearm, a compressor, four cellphones and a white Toyota Quantam were recovered. Mojapelo says police believe the accused may be linked to other serious crimes within the Burgersfort Cluster.

“The origin of the recovered items is being determined through ongoing police investigations. The suspects will appear in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court, soon, on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of suspected stolen property. They will also appear in the Mencklenburg Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery,” his statement read.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended the members involved on a job well done, saying these arrests will go a long way in getting rid of crime in Limpopo.
