We should all be ambassadors for road safety – Vhembe Mayor

Everybody should be an ambassador of road safety, said Vhembe Mayor, Dowelani Nenguda at the road safety campaign at Tshipise Tsha Sagole last week Friday.

LIMPOPO – “The buying of licences play a role in the occurrence of accidents on our roads. Many people have lost their loved ones and a lot of families are without bread winners due to road carnage. Let us become ambassadors of road safety, especially in our province and the Vhembe district in particular” said Nenguda.

He urged all road users to observe road signs as we approach the festive season. “Pedestrians should wear white or reflector clothes to be visible when they walk along the roads. Animals should be tied with reflector belts on their necks so that they will also be visible as they stray along the roads,” said Nenguda. He called upon community members not to burn tarred roads when they have service delivery protests because it leads to potholes which later cause accidents on the roads.

The Chief Director at the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Jane Mulaudzi, said that some of the causes of road accidents in Limpopo include high speeds, pedestrians, stray animals, tiredness, tire burst, bicycles and motorbike users.

Mulaudzi highlighted that the most common cause of accidents in Vhembe is reckless driving and drunk driving. She said that when a person is drunk and walking home alone, that we must take that person home because he or she might be hit by a car when they cross the road. “Drivers should rest after driving for two hours because one may fall asleep while driving or lose their concentration,” said Jane.

The Secretary of Vhembe Taxi Association, Alfred Mphigalale, said that taxi drivers who do not obey traffic rules must be arrested and commuters must be respected. “We inspect our taxis to check if they comply with traffic laws. Commuters should report taxi drivers who disrespect them.”
