Nkakareng Rakgoale was reacting to the arrest of a 28-year-old woman for the murder of her son.

POLOKWANE – “Parents are supposed to love and nurture their children, not to abuse and kill them.” These were the words of the MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale, reacting to the arrest of a 28-year-old woman for the murder of her 11-year-old son.

Rakgoale says continuing cases of murder against the vulnerable in society remains a concern to the department. “As society, we are supposed to take good care of these innocent souls because they are the future of this country,’ she said.

The body of an 11-year-old boy was found buried in a shallow grave in the yard of the woman’s rented house in Hlalanikahle village, near Monsterlus. The motive is unknown.

Rakgoale says the boy’s murder has happened during a time when government and the country wages a serious war against the killing of women and children. She has therefore urged parents who are experiencing challenges in raising their children to approach social workers and seek assistance.

“The department has a childcare and protection programme aimed at safeguarding and promoting the well-being of children, as well as family preservation programmes,” her statement concluded.

The woman is expected to appear in the Hlogotlou Magistrate’s Court, soon.
