What South Africans should or should not do during the national anthem

MEC for Transport, Dickson Masemola says while the anthem should be recited with appropriate respect, there are certain things that are not allowed

POLOKWANE – During his address at the Mankweng leg of operation Swara Tsotsi, MEC for Transport, Dickson Masemola noted with concern that most people do not follow protocol when the national anthem is sung.

So what should you do when the national anthem is played? Masemola says while the anthem should be recited with appropriate respect, there are certain things that are aren’t allowed while the anthem is being played and noted them.

1. No one is allowed to walk around while it is recited.

2. Everyone should stand to attention with their hands placed at their sides when singing the anthem.

3. Civilians should take their hats off as a sign of respect and law officials in uniform need to salute.

Every South African needs to be united as a nation.
