Effective studying tips to help learners ace their exams

With the final exams just around the corner, Review thought it would be a good idea to ask a teacher for some study tips.

POLOKWANE – Nthabiseng Magaane, the Maths and life sciences teacher at Peter Nchabeleng Secondary School in Seshego,  shared the following tips with us.

She said that when a teacher gives learners specific pages or past exams to study from, they should try ‘writing the exam paper like they are sitting in the class’. “Set an alarm clock, and try to complete the paper within the same amount of time you would have when sitting for the actual paper. That way you will be able to identify key problem areas,” she explained.

She added that another proven idea is to use flashcards. “Using flashcards helps you memorise short facts in a flash, but for the tougher subjects  or the subjects you struggle with the most, rather adopt a study method that can help you understand, summarise and memorise a lot of information effectively, without wasting any of your study time.”

Nthabiseng said that mind maps are also very helpful when a learner needs to cram for an exam. “Drawing a diagram, helps you organise facts and ideas around one central subject. It also helps to combine words, pictures and colours to summarise complex information in a visual way.”

TIP!! Break your studying into shorter periods of time will make less of a chore and give your mind time to absorb the material before moving on. Develop and practice good study habits. Make it a habit and it will become second nature to you. Find what works for you and stick with it.
