Illegal miner killed in rockfall outside Burgersfort

A 29 -year-old man died instantly after he was struck by a rock during a rockfall in Mooihoek village,

LIMPOPO – Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Mj Genl Jan Scheepers has warned the public to refrain from engaging in illegal mining activities, after a young man was killed during such as activity on Monday morning.

A 29 -year-old man died instantly after he was struck by a rock during a rockfall at a mountain in Mooihoek village, within the Driekop Policing Precinct near Burgersfort said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The police were notified about the incident, and upon arrival at the scene they found the deceased lying on the ground. He had sustained critical injuries believed to be caused by the falling rocks, and was certified dead by the emergency services personnel.

According to information, the deceased was illegally mining chrome. The deceased was identified as Thato Kganana from Driekop Mogoleng section.

A case of inquest was opened for further police investigation.
