Two sentenced to life in prison for rape

The Mogalakwena Regional Court on Thursday, 26 September handed down hefty jail terms to two men found guilty of a rape.

LIMPOPO – In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Const Maphure Manamela said David Selebogo (37) and Peter Masingi (39), were each condemned to life imprisonment for the rape of a 20-year-old woman  in Mahwelereng outside Mokopane in 2016.

The victim was attacked at around 19:00 on 17 December 2016, while she was on her way to the local spaza shop. She was first confronted by the first accused Selebogo, who threatened and dragged her to a secluded spot and raped her. He then forced the victim to his friend’s house in Hospital View and on arrival, he and his friend raped her repeatedly.

The victim was released a few hours later and although shaken by the ordeal, she contacted her aunt for help. The police were notified and the victim was rescued, added Manamela.

A case of rape was opened and police traced the suspects until Selebogo was arrested. Further investigation led to Masingi being arrested a few months later.

The case was allocated to Detective Sgt Lesetja Langa from the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), and he together with his team gathered the information that assisted in the investigation and ensured the duo received hefty sentences.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba commended the investigating officer and the team for their sterling efforts and diligent work which ensured the perpetrators were brought to book.
