Police arrest Tzaneen woman found in possession of firearms, bullet proof vest and balaclava

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba has hailed the efforts of police members involved in the process of ridding the province of illegal firearms.

LIMPOPO – This, after a 25-year-old woman was arrested in Tzaneen on Saturday, 28 September, after she was found  in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, said Police Spokesperson, Const Maphure Manamela in a statement.

Members of the Tzaneen Crime Intelligence and Tracking Team Unit received a tip-off about a possible stolen motor vehicle at Thabina Village. Upon arrival at the location the members found the said vehicle at a house in the area.

The female owner of the house was arrested and the vehicle seized. After further investigations the members searched the house and recovered two rifles, 111 rounds of R5 ammunition, one round of 9mm ammunition, two balaclavas, one bullet proof security vest, and two magazines for a rifle, Manamela added.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen at the Tubatse police earlier this month.

The woman will soon appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court  on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.

All recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic investigations to determine possible links in violent crimes, she said.

“The removal of firearms from the hands of criminals will have a significant impact on crimes such as murder, CITs and aggravated robberies,” Ledwaba concluded.
