Tutors at students’ fingertips with new mobile app, Tutling

An app which will enable students from various universities to receive academic assistance online has been created by an interdisciplinary team.

LIMPOPO – The team consists of Ntsundeni Ndou, Tshifhiwa Munzhelele and Excellent Muvhango.

One of the co-founders, Ndou, hails from Mukula village outside Thohoyandou.

Tutling is an educational app which allows students to request tutorials and receive academic assistance online. Ndou explained that tutorials can be conducted through chatting or a video call. “The app has an electronic whiteboard, which allows tutors to write things down to the benefit of students. All lessons can be recorded and retrieved for later use,” he added.

Ndou mentioned that students will benefit from the app by accessing academic assistance instantly, instead of arranging a one-on-one meeting with the tutor. “Students’ academic assistance is not limited to people they can meet. For example, a University of Limpopo student can be assisted by a Wits student for similar content.”

Part of the reason for creating the app was to save money and time for both students and tutors. “Previously, for one to access tutorials, you had to travel to meet with the tutors but with Tutling, all tutorial lessons can be done online without spending money,” Ndou said.

Ndou said they have a dream for their app to be used globally.

“Although we struggle to find affordable developers, we are glad to announce that the app can be downloaded on the Google Play Store.”

Ntsundeni Ndou is currently pursuing a B.Sc degree in chemical engineering with a focus on Clean Coal Technology at the University of the Witwatersrand.
