Limpopo: serial rapist sentenced to 27 years

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Maj Genl Jan Scheepers, has welcomed the sentence handed down by the Polokwane High Court this week, to the 24-year-old Papi Simon Kgwale.

LIMPOPO – Kgwale was convicted on three counts of rape committed between 2015 and 2018 in the Motetema policing area outside Groblersdal, confirmed Police Spokesperson, Const Maphure Manamela.

In February 2015, the accused raped a 20-year-old student. The victim was on her way to school when he attacked her and threatened her with a knife before he raped her.

In April 2015, Kgwale raped a 13-year-old girl. He attacked her while she was on her way to school at about 06:30 and threatened her with a knife before he dragged her to a secluded spot and raped her.

In April 2018, he raped a 32-year-old woman. She was on her way to work when he threatened her with a knife and raped her.

All three cases were allocated to Detective Sgt Robert Makola from the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit,  who ensured justice prevailed at the end.

Kgwale was sentenced to an effective 27 years’ imprisonment, nine years for each crime committed, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearm Control Act Section 1083 (1) (G) of Act 60 of 2000, Manamela added.

Scheepers has commended the investigating officer and those involved, for their hard work and dedication.
