POLOKWANE – Cancer survivor, Fortune Monama challenged the Department of Health to educate rural families on childhood cancer-related issues during a Childhood Cancer Awareness event at the pediatric oncology unit recently.

The event which was held on Wednesday, 18 September, was attended by Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba, nurses and doctors from various hospitals, practices and clinics in Limpopo.

During the event Ramathuba toured the hospital, greeted patients. During her address she refuted the myth that childhood cancer is a death sentence. “Childhood cancer is not a ‘death sentence. Cancer is curable and treatable.”

She added that she was inspired by the mothers who remained hopeful. “When I see you singing those healing songs with confidence, I feel inspired and motivated,” she said. “We are proud of you, continue being our ambassadors now that you’ve got the knowledge on childhood cancer, go out there and educate other mothers at our villages.”
