3 homes set alight in mob justice attack in Thohoyandou; 9 arrested

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe reports that residents in the village went on a rampage in the early hours of Tuesday morning and torched three houses belonging to people whom they accused of being responsible for the murder of the 97-year-old, Mbengeni Malise.

LIMPOPO – Nine men are expected to appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on charges of arson and malicious damage to property, following their arrest on Tuesday, 17 September.

This, after three homes were torched and damaged during a mob attack in the Mulavuwe village in the Thohoyandou policing area.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe reports that residents in the village went on a rampage in the early hours of Tuesday morning and torched three houses belonging to people whom they accused of being responsible for the murder of the 97-year-old, Mbengeni Malise.

“Malise was found with several stab wounds in her two-roomed house last Wednesday. No arrests have been made yet,” he said.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of other people involved in both the mob attack and for the murder of Malise to urgently contact Detective Sergeant Nekhavhambe Rembuluwani at 071 511 1213/015 960 1080; the crime stop number 0860010111or the nearest police station

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has condemned continuous acts of vigilantism and mob attacks perpetrated by communities in Limpopo, saying the arrests made will send a strong message that any acts of vigilantism will not be tolerated.
