Spruce up your outfit this Heritage day with these tips

Heritage month celebrates culture and heritage. Revew spoke to Violet Makamu, a fashion designer who shared ways of accessorising traditional clothing.

POLOKWANE – One way of accessorising your traditional outfit is by using jewellery.

This works best when you have solid colours and accessorise with large jewellery. “You can have a blue sishweshwe dress and beautify it with bold statement pieces that will make it look extraordinary. Gold makes the darker colours pop, while silver works well with pastels, ” she said.

She added that when accessorising your outfit, make sure that the accessories suit the cut. For example, when wearing a strapless gown or sweetheart neckline, accessorise with a pair of dangling earrings rather than a necklace to give it that alluring look. If you want to wear a necklace, wear earrings that are not too busy and distracting.

The beauty of traditional attire is you can give a modern outfit like a formal suit or dress a traditional touch by accessorising with a traditional doek and matching shoes or even a necklace and bangle in traditional cloth, she added.

Beads and beaded accessories are also very trendy. They are the classic symbol of tradition and you can get them in a variety of shapes and colours to suit whatever outfit you want to wear them with. They are also perfect to bedazzle shoes to create a different look. “The great thing about beads is that the shoes don’t even have to be new to be given a face lift with beads,” she concluded.
