A meeting between parents, the school governing body and the principal conducted on Tuesday morning at a local school was the result of a video trending on social media showing two Grade 12 learners allegedly attacking another learner in Nirvana.
Nirvana Community Policing Forum acting Chairperson, Shabier Valjie stated that the Grade 12 learners reportedly admitted to their deeds and that both boys and their parents were apologetic towards the victim and his parents.
He indicated that the Grade 12 learners were warned that they would be suspended should any similar incident occur.
The video clearly shows how a boy, identified as a Grade 9 learner, is being attacked and beaten up by two boys in uniform from the same school.
Maphure Manamela of the Provincial Police Communications Centre confirmed that cases of common assault, malicious damage to property and intimidation are being investigated.
The video shows how the 14-year-old learner, accompanied by a friend and underway to a spaza shop in the neighbourhood, was accosted by two other learners who allegedly demanded cigarettes and his cell phone. It shows how the boy is slapped against the head and kicked on the body. He is later pinned to the floor with his friend pulling him by the leg in an effort to save him from his attackers. His jacket was torn and his cell phone damaged during the attack. The boy was taken to a doctor for a medical examination after complaining about headaches and body ache after the incident, it was learnt.
Reportedly the victim’s parents only learnt about the incident once the video was forwarded to them. When visiting the school the victim’s parents were allegedly threatened by the two Grade 12s who, reportedly also continued intimidating him to such an extent that his parents had to collect him from school.
