Be a buddy not a bully

From time to time children may experience bully behaviour. Either at school or at home. Piet Hugo Primary decided to host an anti-bully week where they informed, encouraged and empowered children against bulling.

POLOKWANE – Last week was jam-packed with activities which started with Marise van Wyk from EQ4Kids hosting a bully workshop. Here she discussed aspects such as sibling rivalry, temperaments, anger management and how to know your emotions and handle them. She also taught the learners about labelling each other.

“I learned that I need to keep my hands to myself and to ask someone before you touch them or take anything from them,” says Leruschka Voigt.

Tuesday was a fun day out with a visit to the school by six dogs from the K9-Academy who performed tricks for the learners.

With this, they learned that you need to respect animals and not hurt them. A highlight for the children was when the school’s principal had to be a decoy for one of the dogs to attack.

After the dog show, Panarotti’s Mall of the North visited the school and brought Anti-Bully pizza for the children to enjoy.

A big favourite for most of the children was our local rhino, Ronnie the Rhinoceros. Ronnie used stories and songs to teach the children that they are each made uniquely and that to be different is no reason to bully someone else.

Thursday was a day set aside for the girls in the school where Jacqueline Ferns, Mrs Tammy Taylor South Africa 2019 finalist, spoke to them about identity and who God wants them to be. Friday was they boys’ turn as the men of MAN came to speak to them. Mike Meyer had a special word with the learners about being bullied himself.
