[PICTURES] Family tells of harrowing sight as car crashes into tree, catches fire

A family is still reeling in shock after a vehicle crashed into a tree in front of their home in Thabo Mbeki Street last evening and burst into flames.

POLOKWANE – The Wolmarans family told Review that shortly after 23:00 last night, they heard what they say sounded like an accident.

Shortly afterwards, a vehicle burst into flames in front of their house.

“We could hear how the bits of the car started to explode and our biggest fear was to stay away from windows because we were afraid that something would come flying through, injuring one of us,” Elmara Wolmarans said.

The family said despite trying to get hold of the police and fire department only the fire department showed up almost half an hour later and police at 10:00 this morning had still not been on the scene.

“The car is still on the pavement right next to the front gate. It is a sad reminder of something frightening that happened and we are not sure when it will be removed or by whom. We would like to thank the Community Policing Forum for assisting us when no one else was willing,” Wolmarans said.

According to the family, there was no one in the vehicle as it was burning as the driver was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

They are unsure of the cause of the incident and are grateful that no one was injured.
