Residents react to plans of a shopping complex and hotel at park in Grobler Street

According to a local authority notice, an application has been made for the closure of the park for a new development that will include shops, offices, hotel/apartments, conference facilities, and for institutional use such as a gymnasium and restaurant.

POLOWKANE – Residents in the vicinity where Grobler and Oost streets meet, have mixed reactions over proposed plans to convert the park into a shopping complex and hotel.

Their biggest concern is the additional traffic the proposed development will bring to the area.

One of the residents who did not want to be named said there are various other spaces available in the city that could be used for this purpose. “Areas that are reserved for parks should not be converted into business as parks are there to benefit the ordinary person.” She also said the noise level during and after construction, will disrupt the peace. “Furthermore, there are no other parks in this area that are accessible to our children. This is one of only a few parks left that have not been invaded by drinkers (sic) over the weekends.”

Notice of the park closure as available of the provincial gazette.

Mpho Tshivhase, who is also a resident, said she is pleased by the proposed development. She rents out property in the area. “With the shopping centre, my rental space will be in demand and it will create an income for my family.”

Jacques Joubert told BONUS he initially had reservations about the quality of the development, but upon close inspection of the proposed plans he was satisfied. “This development will surely uplift the area as the structure envisioned is quite upmarket.” He said objections to the park not being available for leisure use were not valid anymore as children rarely play in the park.

A municipal board at the park informing residents how the objection process works.

The park has become a hub for criminal activities such as public drinking and drug use and it is not well maintained by the municipality. There is currently a board at the park informing residents how the objection process works should they want to voice their dissatisfaction.
