Department to investigate eight botched circumcisions in Mokopane

The MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba has sent a team of experts to investigate several cases of botched circumcisions.

MOKOPANE – This comes after eight boys, between the ages of 10 and 12 years, were admitted to the Voortrekker and Mokopane hospitals with mutilated genitals earlier this year.

In a statement, the department said the procedures were apparently all done at a private practice, the parents of the boys have laid complaints at the department.

Ramathuba confirmed that once investigations are concluded, the department will act accordingly and has called on parents, whose children have had similar experiences, to come forward.

“We frown upon botched circumcisions, whether carried out at a traditional initiation school, hospital or private establishment,” Ramathuba said.

The department has since referred the boys to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for treatment.
