Muni refutes ‘social media purchase order’

The Greater Giyani Municipality has distanced itself from a fake purchase order currently circulating on social media.

LIMPOPO – According to the purchase order, the municipal manager approved a purchase order for an amount of R10 million over three years, to stage the annual Appreciation Show for Dr Thomas Chauke, a legendary Tsonga artist based in the Collins Chabane Municipality.

“As a municipality, we want to set the record straight that the document is fake. There is no such purchase order, and there will never be that kind of purchase order as this is not the way in which municipalities operate,” said Municipal Spokesperson, Steve Mavunda.

He said the municipality did not venture into monetary agreement with individuals, saying even the previous agreements did not involve monetary terms.

“Our agreements are usually in the form of providing venues or equipment free of charge,” he said.

Mavunda commented on the purchase order seen on social media, saying one could deduce from the amount on the document that it is false.

“The municipality remained committed to the cause of good governance by fighting against fraud and corruption.”

Asked whether he was aware of the purchase order posted on social media, Praenomen Chabane, who manages Dr Thomas Chauke, said he was, but he denied any involvement.

“We are distancing ourselves from this, it is not even our event that is stipulated on that document,” he said.

The event is purported to have been advertised by Amazon, but bares false contact persons, and false contact numbers bearing the Polokwane telephone dialling code and a false municipal stamp purported to be from the Greater Giyani Municipality.
