Police have launched a manhunt for three suspects responsible for the alleged hijacking and robbing of a maxi taxi driver in the city on Monday evening.
Maphure Manamela of the Provincial Police Communications Centre confirmed the incident and indicated that the matter was being investigated.
According to information the 29-year-old taxi driver received a call from a so-called customer who needed a ride from Bodenstein Street to Westenburg at around 18:00. The pick-up point seemed to be rental accommodation close to the Limpopo High Court, according to a source.
The passenger allegedly got into the car and once in Westenburg asked the driver to stop at the local library and wait while he walked to and entered a nearby house. The passenger later returned, accompanied by two other men. The trio got into the car and asked to be driven to Grand Canyon Street on the outskirts of the suburb.
Upon reaching the requested destination the initial passenger allegedly produced a firearm while the other two carried knives, it was learnt. They searched the driver and robbed him of R500 as well as his cell phone.
It is alleged that they forced the driver to the back seat while one of the suspects got behind the wheel and drove in the direction of Mankweng.
The suspects reportedly dropped the driver at Dalmada before fleeing in his Volkswagen Polo.
The driver was not injured and no shots were fired.
Manamela indicated that the vehicle was later found abandoned in the city.
The suspects are still unknown and Manamela requested anyone with information to call the crime stop number on 08600 10 111 or report to the nearest Police station.
