Limpopo woman appears in court on charge of concealment of birth

The community of Masakaneng settlement outside Groblersdal within Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality made a shocking discovery recently when they found the body of a stillborn baby in the area.

LIMPOPO – The residents, angered by the discovery, shortly thereafter launched their own investigation into who might be responsible.

Deejay Ledwaba, a community leader, said the discovery disturbed the entire settlement and residents saw it fit to work closely with the police to bring the perpetrator to book.

“We have never seen anything so disturbing in this area. The person responsible for this must be punished accordingly. We are still traumatised following the incident. Passersby made the discovery last Monday in the nearby bushes, not very far from the settlement,” explained Ledwaba.

He added that the community worried that other pregnant women may also commit similar acts and encouraged those who did not want their babies to consult with relevant authorities for help.

Col Moatshe Ngoepe, Provincial Police Spokesperson, confirmed a case of concealment of birth was opened at the Groblersdal police station following the discovery and a 28 year-old woman was arrested.

The suspect briefly appeared before the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was granted R2 000 bail.

Her case was postponed to 16 August.
