Suspects shot and arrested after business robbery in Northam

Three suspects were arrested, two shot and injured during a vehicle chase following an business robbery at a local clothing store in Northam

LIMPOPO – The robbery happened at around 08:56 on Saturday morning when two armed suspects accosted a G4S security guard who had entered the store to collect money.

In a statement, Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the suspects robbed the guard of his company firearm and instructed the store employees to open the business safe. During the incident the store was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money and  both the guard and the employees were locked inside the safe.

The police were alerted and together with help from the local community which included  air support from the local businessman, the  suspect’s vehicle, a Toyota RunX was spotted in the local RDP settlement area. During an ensuing vehicle chase, two of the suspects were shot and injured and a third was cornered and arrested. The injured were taken to hospital under police guard, explained Mojapelo.

During the arrests a silver Toyota RunX, three 9mm pistols, three magazines, ten rounds of ammunition, twenty four cartridges and an undisclosed amount of money was confiscated.

The suspects, aged 21, 27 and 37,  will appear in Northam Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and resisting arrest.

Mojapelo added that the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic investigations to determine if they were used for the commission of other crimes.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl Nneke Ledwaba  has commended all role players involved in these arrests and has extended special thanks to the business community and other communities at large for their support in the fight against crime.
