Plans underway to upgrade the city’s landfill sites

POLOKWANE – Plans are underway to enlarge, build and extend several waste and landfill sites in and around the city. The plans were announced by Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng during the recent State-of-the-City-Address.

The city, in a media statement at the beginning of the month called on citizens to stop illegal dumping, as it may cause health hazards to residents. Illegal dumping sites named were the dumping sites in zone 4 in Seshego along Alf Makaleng and Samuel Thema Streets.

The municipality called on citizens to be responsible, obey by-laws and use designated dumping and landfill sites, where there are weekly collection programmes in place. “Our communities have raised the issue of waste collection and illegal dumping and we listened and acted,” Nkadimeng said.

“We are building rural transfer stations. In 2018/19 the Vaalkop transfer station in ward 9 has been completed and it is ready to start operating. The transfer station will assist the community in reducing the illegal dumping of disposable nappies in the veld, which causes environmental pollution and degradation. Other rural transfer stations that are still under construction include Dikgale and Makotopong, both at a R4,2 million budget. The Molepo transfer station in ward 4 (at R1 million) is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019/20 financial year.”

Nkadimeng said the municipality provides waste collection services in urban areas that include the city, Seshego, Mankweng and Sebayeng.

Waste collection is also rendered in 18 villages in rural areas and litter picking services in rural areas are rendered by utilising the EPWP programme with a budget of R4 million.

Transportation for waste collection service in urban areas has been improved. Three service providers have been appointed for a period of three years with effect from 1 February.

New waste collection projects are planned for the 2019/20 financial year:

• The extension of Weltevreden landfill site with budget at R6 million.

• Completion of phase 3 of Aganang landfill site budgeted at R6 million.

• Completion of Dikgale transfer station budgeted at R1,4 million.

• Completion of Makotopong transfer station with budget of R2 million.

• Construction of Molepo rural transfer station budgeted at R2,5 million.

• Acquisition of 6 and 9 cubic metre skip containers for both urban and rural waste management with a budget of R1,3 million.
