University of Limpopo (UL) on Saturday launched an alumni chapter in Namibia to strengthen its footprint in the country.
The UL boasts a number of prominent alumni serving Namibia in prominent positions including executive directors of companies, parliamentarians and health practitioners.
Patrick Mabaso, UL Alumni and Convocation Deputy President reportedly said the chapter is an official forum for former students to engage their alma mater.
“It represents the interests of its members and enables alumni to participate in the university’s activities. The convocation raises funds for the university, sources bursaries and arranges vocational training and internships as well as mentorships for current students.”
Minister of Information and Communication Technology in Namibia and a UL alumnus, Stanley Simataa reportedly said most professionals in Namibia have become who they are because of the solid foundation laid by the UL.
He is quoted to have added that it was not easy to allocate scarce resources to benefit students from afar. “We applaud the University of Limpopo management for accepting Namibians during those difficult years and ensuring that all our academic and social needs were met. The establishment of the chapter gives the alumni a sacred duty to nurture the bond between Namibia and the UL and propel it to greater heights.”
Jesika Singh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Partnerships was quoted to have said there has been significant growth in infrastructure, including student accommodation, state-of-the-art laboratories for languages, chemistry and physics and new programmes such as geology and mining degree as well as the opening of the first medical school since the dawn of democracy in South Africa.
The UL Namibia Alumni Chapter comprises of Rehabeam Auala, Chairperson, Milkka Mungunda, Deputy Chairperson, Hannu Shipena, Secretary, Ignatius Thudinyane, Treasurer and Executive members Maria Dax, Felix Mukasa and David Keendjele.
