Here’s a breakdown of all new developments in the pipeline for city

Student accommodation, a truck-inn, Sasol depot, botanical garden, as well as a total of 1 040 RDP houses, are all in the pipeline for Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – Challenges with trucks parking in the city overnight will be addressed once the current lodged township establishment for extension 136 is finalised. The area, comprising 26,3 ha, is situated three-kilometres north of the CBD, and south of the Polokwane International Airport, and is next to Landdros Maré Street.

The new development will include a truck-inn, a Sasol depot and tankers, a filling station and light commercial as well as commercial projects.

“The development aims at creating thousands of jobs during construction and thereafter permanent jobs for approximately 16 000 people,” Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng announced during the State-of-the-City address last week.

The municipality has also identified some catalytic projects such as an eco-estate/resort in the game reserve as well as an arts and cultural hub at Bakone Malapa, which will include film studios and a film archive, with a workshop and training area, retail, hotel, manufacturing area, as well as a theatre as part of the strategy over the long term for growth and development of the city.

An industrial park around the Polokwane airport is also contemplated, as is a post-incubation hub in extension 26 to assist aspiring SMMEs with infrastructure and resources with the assistance of government programmes and grants.

A botanical garden adjacent extension 124 is planned to secure the iconic Clivicolia plant. A total of 1 040 RDP houses have been allocated for 2019/20 in extension 78, and the president committed to build a school in that area.

Extension 133, comprising almost 3 000 sites, was approved for residential and other land uses. The construction of 450 housing units in this area is soon to commence. Annadale extension 2 will yield some 494 rental units, to be concluded within 18 months and extension 76, another rental unit project, will comprise 240 rental units. The planned date for commencement is around October.

Student accommodation under the Polokwane Housing Assosiation at extension 106 and 108 next to Sasol Madiba Park will soon commence.

“A contractor has been appointed and construction will start any time now,” Nkadimeng said.

Jendza Capital (Pty) Ltd was appointed as the preferred private partner to develop and operate the student accommodation. PHA and the Municipality made land available to the private partner on a long-term lease (20 years).

The bidder was appointed through competitive bidding. The company was appointed to develop two projects namely; Ext 106 project and Ext 108 project. The contractor is expected to raise all the required funds to successfully execute the project.

Another Gap housing development is to take place in extension 107, where 754 housing units will be erected, to be sold for outright ownership. Construction is anticipated to start in January 2020.
