MOKOPANE – Three men were caught red-handed with stolen water meters, mere days after Yolandé Coetzee, DA Ward Councillor, opened a case of theft at the Mokopane police station.
This follows widespread water meter theft in town in the last week. The men reportedly tried to sell the water meters at two scrapyards in town, which prompted the business owners to alert a local security company.
According to Coetzee, affected residents had to pay R1 200 for new meters as the recovered meters are mostly beyond repair. Coetzee vowed to continue fighting for a change in by-laws that will ultimately relieve residents from carrying the cost of new water meters.
The men were arrested and the police investigation continues.
