Teenager dies after being shot during community protest in Lebowakgomo

Initial police investigations revealed that the deceased was shot when a conflict erupted between security guards at the mine and the community

LIMPOPO -This follows community protests that erupted on Thursday afternoon near Dithabaneng Mine in Sefalaolo, Ga-Mphahlele Village in the Lebowakgomo policing area.

In a statement,Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe said the police received a call from a hospital where a 18-year-old boy was admitted with gunshot wounds. The deceased was identified as Boshelo Petja and he later succumbed to his injuries.

Initial police investigations revealed that the deceased was shot when a conflict erupted between the security guards and the community. Shots were fired and one person sustained serious injuries.

It is not clear what lead to the incident but the a murder case has been opened. No arrests were made.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the incident and reiterated that communities should not participate in violent protests and should rather opt to resolve their issues in a peaceful manner.
