Legislature appoints chief whip, committee chairpersons

The Provincial Legislature has, on the occasion of its sitting last Thursday, appointed Essob Mokgonyana as the Chief Whip of the house.
Mokgonyane is a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) deployed by the African National Congress and it was learnt that his nomination received the nod by all MPLs. He is also a leader of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo. According to information made available by his new office, Rosemary Molapo becomes the Deputy Chief Whip and will assume all the Chief Whip responsibilities in his absence.

In the same sitting, the Chairpersons of the Portfolio and Standing Committees were also announced and subsequently ratified by the house. It was further learnt that the appointed individuals have been selected based on their experience and also factoring pertinent issues like continuity, youth and gender parity, geographical spread and the broader Tripartite Alliance.

Falaza Mdaka – Petitions and Public Participation.
Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana – Quality of life and status of women, youth and disability.
Portfolio committees chairpersons
Rudolph Phala – Provincial Treasury.
Johanna Aphiri – Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.
Caroline Mahasela – Sport, Arts and Culture.
Sarah Monyamane – Social Development.
Violet Mathye – Education.
Makoma Makhurupetje – Public Works and Infrastructure.
Donald Selamolela – Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
Messina Masekoameng – Agriculture and Rural Development.
Lehlogonolo Masoga – Health.
Rebecca Seono – Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison.
Rogers Monama – Public Administration.
Maria Lekganyane – Oversight on Legislature.
