POLOKWANE – The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Genl, Nneke Ledwaba, has welcomed the hefty jail sentences against three men by the Limpopo High Court.
This, after Mathews Matsobane Kgobe (32), John Mogata Letsoalo (38), Phuti James (33) and a fourth suspect were arrested on two counts of rape, kidnapping and robbery, respectively in May 2017.

Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe explained that two women between the ages of 23 and 31 years old were raped after hitchhiking from Grobler Street to Mankweng.
“Two of the four accused disguised themselves as hitchhikers at the same spot when the other two picked them up, including the women in a white VW Velocity. On the way, the driver drove in the direction of Flora Park. One of the accused, produced a firearm and drove to a secluded spot next to the N1.”
The women were then robbed of their handbags, cellphones, bank cards and cash. Two of the suspects then left the scene to withdraw money from the women’s bank accounts, while the two suspects who were left behind, raped the victims. The women were then dropped in Westenburg, where they managed to seek assistance.
Ngoepe added that the cases were assigned to Sergeant Selolo of the Polokwane FCS Unit to investigate and the suspects were arrested during an operation by the crime intelligence and a tracking team.
Sentence handed down:
– Phuti James Matlamela (33) and Mathews Matsobane Kgobe (32) were found guilty and received life imprisonment for two counts of rape, 15 years imprisonment for two counts of robbery and five years imprisonment for kidnapping.
– John Magata Letsoalo (38) was found guilty of possession of stolen goods and was sentenced to two years imprisonment, suspended for three years.
– The fourth accused later turned state witness.
Ledwaba has applauded the investigating officer and all members involved, saying their efforts will continue to ensure safety to all citizens of Limpopo.
