Being energy efficient today will help build a better future tomorrow

Kemmone Mochai, a qualified mechanical engineer and a certified energy manager at the student branch of the South African energy efficiency confederation says he wants to change the mindset of energy users and educate everyone, especially the youth on how they can be save energy and their futures

POLOKWANE – He is one of several young people who have been given the opportunity to learn more about being energy efficient and make a living in the field. He explained to Review where is energy management journey began…

“I grew up and completed my schooling in Hammanskraal and then went onto the University of Limpopo where I got my degree in mechanical engineering. I could not get an internship to do my P1 and P2 degrees and had to spend a depressing year at home before I got accepted into a programme,” he explained.

“I was excited at the prospect but that excitement later turned into depression upon hearing that I was to join a learnership programme.  I thought to myself what does this help me because they are now telling me that I am a learners and know nothing, but it has changed my life,” he said.

He added that at first the idea of saving the world through energy conservation seemed far fetched, but as he joined in the classes he grew to love the subject. “The love for energy conservation came to me and has not left my side. It has become second nature to me so much so that when I walk into a building and see the many lights I start considering the way I can help them save,” he added.

Kemmone has since worked at a several companies and has helped them become more energy efficient. “I could save companies over R10 million by just changing the mindset… the money they save can then be used for training,  equipment or what ever else they need and in turn they can play a small part in saving our environment.”

He added that starting out in the energy business is not easy as people do not understand when you talk to them about things that they do not understand or see the need for.

Currently he is preparing to go to Washington DC where he will be joining the energy efficiency world conference where he plans to learn and share his experiences and help make the country and the world a better place.

“We need the youth in this country to  believe that in saving energy we are saving our futures. We must become an energy-wise nation,” he concluded.
