Suspect flees with cop’s gun, vehicle

A suspect allegedly in possession of a Police officer’s service pistol is still on the run after a recent incident in Schalk Avenue, Bendor during which he reportedly overwhelmed a responding officer, fired some shots and fled the scene with the officer’s gun and service vehicle.
According to information two Police officers responded to a call from a woman who alleged that she had been raped.
When the officers met the woman she accompanied them to a house in Schalk Drive where the suspect was apprehended.
It was learnt from a source that while the officers were taking the suspect to the Police van he started to resist and a fight between him and one of the officers ensued.
While the officer and suspect reportedly continued to fight on the ground the officer’s weapon allegedly fell from its holster.
It is believed that the suspect then got hold of the gun and fired several shots at the second officer.
The officer retaliated by firing two shots however the suspect managed to get into the Police vehicle and drove off.
According to a source the suspect drove until he reportedly crashed into a wall in Van Niekerk Street where he abandoned the vehicle and fled still carrying the firearm.
It is alleged that the suspect is from Jane Furse.
Maphure Manamela of the Provincial Police Communications Centre confirmed that cases of attempted murder, resisting arrest, robbery, escaping from lawful custody and rape are being investigated.
The suspect has not been arrested and a manhunt continues. Manamela appealed to anyone with information to contact investigating officer Philip Sekhwela on 072 717 8344.
