No problems expected at Sopa – Speaker

Safety measures are in place and all emergency services as well as a full safety complement will be available tomorrow (Friday)

POLOKWANE – Safety measures are in place and all emergency services as well as a full safety complement will be available tomorrow (Friday) at Legislature’s precinct for the official opening of the 6th Limpopo Legislature.

The Premier, Chupu Mathabatha, will also deliver the State-of-the-Province Address (Sopa) at the event.

This assurance has been given by the new Speaker of the Legislature, Movhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya during a pre-Sopa press conference held on Wednesday.  She said some 500 guests were invited to attend the function at  legislature and no problems are expected.

Lerule-Ramakhanya said the Premier’s Sopa will set the tone for the service delivery roadmap plans for the next year and the legislature, according to their constitutional mandate, will hold the administration accountable. “We are the oversight body on behalf of the public,” she said. The premier’s address will be live, to accommodate the rural residents of the province.

Entertainment will be provided by local cultural groups and learners from various schools will form a guard of honour for the Premier as he arrives. She cautioned guests to be on time as nobody will be allowed in the house after the doors have been closed. Guests are expected to be seated by 09:30.

The budget for the proceedings has been reduced from R2,5 million last time in February, to less than R2 million. “The event is held at the legislature in order to save money, as all the sound systems are available and a hall need not be hired for the event. We have also cut on transportation costs, invited fewer guest and saved on gifts for the public,” she concluded.
