SASSA beneficiaries will get their July grant despite fraud cases

The agency says it has advised banks and the South African Post Office to put a stop payment on some accounts.

POLOKWANE – The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is assuring all beneficiaries that they will receive their social grants for the month of July following the identification of potential fraud in 2 800 accounts.

This included 2 200 accounts from different banks and 600 from the South African Post Office (Sapo), nationwide. In a statement released, Sassa notes that it has advised banks and Sapo to stop payment on these accounts and as a result, both Sapo and banks have confirmed that these accounts will not be able to transact on 1 July 2019.

A pensioner who spoke to Review said he had visited the Sassa office in Mokopane to enquire but that “they beat around the bush as to why (he) didn’t receive (his) grant.

“I wasn’t the only one with such a complaint,” he added.

Beneficiaries who are unable to get their grants due to any reasons are advised to:

– Visit the police station to make an affidavit.
– Take their bar-coded or smart card ID together with the completed affidavit to their nearest Sassa office.
– Be the lawful ID holder.
– Take along proof of banking details
