R81 accident victims to be laid to rest

A mass memorial service for the 24 people who died on Monday in an accident along the R81 outside Mooketsi, will be held at the Rapitsi Sports Ground on Thursday, 20 June.

LIMPOPO –  24 youths died after the Quantum they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus along the R81 road between Mooketsi and Giyani on Sunday night, 16 June.

A joint statement issued by the Mopani District Municipality and Greater Letaba Communication Teams, reads as follows: “The Preparatory Team, comprised of government departments, the Mopani District Municipality, Greater Letaba Municipality, SANTACO, businesses, traditional leaders and other stakeholders has been able to identify all the deceased and the exact locations they hail from. It has emerged that 19 of the 24 were learners at four high schools within the Bolobedu cluster with the majority coming from Ga-Rapitsi village. The victims, 18 males and six females, were aged between 13 and 27.”

The memorial service will take place at 12:00 on Thursday 20 June at the Rapitsi Sports Ground. A funeral service has also been planned for Saturday 22 June which is set to take place at the Rapitsi Sports Ground at 07:00.
