UPDATE: Two Phalaborwa locals killed in R71 collision in Gravelotte area

Two people died and over 70 sustained injuries when a bus, bakkie and and SUV collided along the R71 road between Tzaneen and Phalaborwa at around 05:30 on Saturday morning.

LIMPOPO – In an earlier statement, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala explained that the bus,  which was transporting 78 students from the FET in Lephalale to Phalaborwa, allegedly lost control and collided head-on with a GWM bakkie which was travelling in the opposite direction. A Toyota Fortuner thereafter drove into the rear of the bus.

Two occupants from the GWM bakkie died on the scene and 78 passengers from the bus were taken to Letaba and Maphutha Hospitals, respectively, for medical treatment, said Police Spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe in a statement on Saturday evening.

“The deceased have been identified as MF Burger (36) and Jan Louis Hendrik (66), both from Phalaborwa,” Ngoepe added.

The exact cause of this accident is not clear at this stage but a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
