Why do you relay? Big, exciting plans ahead for Cansa

Brew a pot of hope at the potjiekos competition which will take place at the Cansa Relay for Life on 11 October at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

POLOKWANE – Why do you do Relay? This is not merely a question to get you thinking, but also the theme of this year’s Cansa Relay for Life. Christopher Combrink, Relay Coordinator, explains the meaning behind the theme and the question.

“All of us participate in Relay and when someone ask us why, we would say something like it is my work or I’m doing it every year. But there are meaning behind the symbolism of Relay. Relay are originally from sunset to sunrise as, when a person is diagnosed, he is entering a dark and difficult time in his life. We walk to show them we will be beside their sides. Then at some stage, the sun rise again. this is the sign that the patients is now entering a new phase and, once again we will be beside them.”

Combrink explains that the Relay will be taking place on 11 October at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Teams will still dress in their chosen countries’ clothes, but they will also say why do they Relay.

Team registrations open on 7 September during the potjiekos-competition that will take place at the Cansa offices. There are 100 stands available and fees are R150 per stand.

You then supply everything for the pot. No alcohol-drinking or smoking around the pots, as there will be an designated area for smoking. The Evangelies Gereformeerde Kerk will be part of the potjiekos competition and there are big prizes up for grabs. Like a grand trip to experience one of the wonders of Africa. The theme for the potjiekos competition is Brew a pot of hope.

“During relay we have a lumenaria round. In the past we filled the bags with sand. This year we want to fill it with can food. We will contact the schools to assist us in collecting the food cans. After Relay a part of the cans will be donated to Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) ward at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital, a part will be donated back to the schools for their feeding scheme and a part will be donated to charity.”
